Assassination Rogue Guide

[En español]

Welcome to the guide for Assassination Rogue in 8.1. If you’re looking for a good introduction to playing Assassination in Battle for Azeroth PvE, you’ve come to the right place.

With the opening of the new raid, we now have access to new traits and can equip more than 3. This gives us the chance to slot in some single traits that pack a punch.

Introduction

Assassination is seen as the go to easy mode spec among all classes. This is due to the low entry level and fairly straight forward rotation. We pack a lot of single target damage with our basic tool kit. In addition to our single target we have some consistent cleave potential with our DoT orientated kit and talents to support that. Assassination still retains a lot of similarities to how it was in Legion due to minimal changes moving from expansion to expansion.

Talents

Assassination talents have once again defaulted to our two familiar builds.

Toxic blade is fit for all situations and Exsanguinate sees some play in mythic+ enviroment.

Single Target

  • Level 15: Elaborate Planning
  • Level 30: Master Assassin or Subterfuge
  • Level 45: Vigor
  • Level 60: Optional
  • Level 75: Optional
  • Level 90: Toxic Blade Or Exsanguinate
  • Level 100: Poison Bomb

Multi Target(f.ex 5 man instances)

  • Level 15: Elaborate Planning
  • Level 30: Subterfuge
  • Level 45: Vigor
  • Level 60: Optional
  • Level 75: Optional
  • Level 90: Toxic Blade or Exsanguinate
  • Level 100: Poison Bomb

You should always run a simulation of your character to check which talents are best for you.

Gearing & Stats

Gearing in Battle for Azeroth should be more straight forward. Blizzard is trying to make item level always be the primary deciding factor and limit your ways of obtaining loot by having only personal loot, and not allowing trading of all pieces. We still have our preferred stats, but they should not be as decisive as in legion.

“Stat Weights,” is a term you might have heard many times. What is actually being discussed, is scale factors, because they usually change the moment you change a piece of equipment. This is why we recommend that you sim your character to compare items rather than relying on weights.

For stats you should be aiming for the following:

Single Target

  • Agility
  • Haste
  • Critical Strike
  • Mastery
  • Versatility

Multi Target

  • Agility
  • Critical Strike
  • Mastery
  • Versatility
  • Haste

For your food buff while raiding you should use the primary stat Feast. If you’re unable to use a Feast, the food for the secondary stat that your scale factors says is highest.

For potions you should use Battle pot of Agility in nearly every situation. There are very edge cases where Potion of Bursting Blood might come ahead of Agility in single target situations.

For your flask you should always use Flask of the currents.

For your ring enchants you should use the secondary stat that your scale factors says is highest.

For your weapon enchants you should use the two secondary stats that your scale factors says is highest rather than two of the same one.

Azerite Powers

These are some of the powers you want to aim for for the respected encounter styles. Take note that having at least one Uldir trait is more and more important the longer the tier goes on. At the same time said traits are not that impressive outside the raid due to their secondary effect only activating inside the raid instance.

Single Target

Outer Ring

  • Shrouded Suffocation: These are still the go to traits for Exsanguinate build as it greatly improves Garrote damage.
  • Double Dose: Bread and butter of the poison build. Very strong on single/low target situations where you do not use Fan of Knives.
  • Nothing Personal: A great one point wonder as the energy regeneration portion does not stack with multiple traits.
  • Treacherous Covenant: The unique primary trait from this raid tier. Extremely strong overall and is not limited to single target like Double Dose.

Inner Ring

  • Heed My Call: Good on single target and aoe.
  • Gutripper: Offers a tad bit of execute.
  • Overwhelming Power: Fairly good on single target but not as useful on aoe.

Multi Target

Outer Ring

  • Shrouded Suffocation: This trait becomes really good for non-Exsanguinate too when we have multiple targets and spec into Subterfuge.
  • Scent of Blood: This trait starts to ramp up quickly if you have many adds that live for the full duration.
  • Echoing Blades: Extremely potent trait for mythic plus enviroment where you have plenty of targets. Especially true with this seasons Reaping affix.
  • Treacherous Covenant: This does also work outside raids, but can easily backfire in mythic plus due to the downside it has.

Inner Ring

  • Heed My Call: Good on single target and aoe.
  • Unstable Flames: More crit means more combo points.
  • Overwhelming Power: Fairly good on single target but not as useful on aoe.

For more information you can check out Herodamage for more traits or run a simulation for your character and the item(s) in question.
